How to grow herbs indoors? 

Bringing a bit of the garden inside is a great way to have fresh flavors (and some natural greenery) within arm's reach. Whether you’re looking to brighten up a kitchen windowsill or start a small medicinal apothecary, here is the short-and-sweet guide to successful indoor herb gardening.

1. Let There Be Light

Most herbs are sun-worshippers. They typically need 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Best Spot: A south-facing window is usually the prime real estate.

  • The AI Assist: If your space is a bit gloomy, a simple LED grow light can bridge the gap.

2. Drainage is Non-Negotiable

Herbs hate "wet feet." If their roots sit in water, they will rot faster than you can say "basil pesto."

  • The Pot: Ensure your containers have drainage holes at the bottom.

  • The Soil: Use a high-quality potting mix rather than garden soil, which is too heavy and can bring in pests.

3. Watering Wisdom

The "finger test" is your best friend. Stick your finger an inch into the soil; if it feels dry, it’s time to water.

  • Consistency: Aim for damp, not drenched.

  • Airflow: Indoor air can get stagnant. Occasionally opening a window or using a small fan helps prevent mold and keeps the plants sturdy.

4. Top Herbs for Indoor Success

While almost anything can grow with enough effort, these are the most "forgiving" for indoor life:

  • Basil: Loves heat and light; keep it on the warmest sill.

  • Mint: Fast-growing and resilient (best kept in its own pot so it doesn't take over).

  • Chives: Very low-maintenance and handles lower light better than most.

  • Calendula: Great for those interested in medicinal uses; it’s cheerful and does well in pots if it gets enough sun.

  • Rosemary: Needs excellent drainage and slightly less water than the leafy herbs.

5. Harvest Regularly

Don’t be afraid to snip! Regular harvesting encourages the plant to grow bushier and prevents it from becoming "leggy" or going to seed too early. Just remember the one-third rule: never harvest more than 1/3 of the plant at a time.
